Submission Guidelines

These guidelines summarize our expectations and align with the Society for American Archaeology (SAA) style used by the Southwestern Anthropological Association (SWAA). For complete, authoritative details, please consult the official sources linked below.

1) Getting your manuscript ready

  • Length & types: Research (2,500–8,000 words), Policy/Practice (1,500–4,000), Perspectives (800–2,000), Data/Field Notes (800–2,500).
  • Format: Double-spaced, readable 12-pt font, 1″ margins, page numbers. Use author–date citations and a “References Cited” list.
  • File: Submit a clean DOCX or ODT; figures/tables as separate files if large.
  • Structure: Title, author(s) + affiliation(s), abstract (150–250 words), 3–6 keywords, main text, acknowledgments, data/ethics notes (if applicable), references, tables/figures with captions.

2) Citations & references (SAA-style basics)

  • In-text: (Author Year) or (Author Year:Page)—e.g., (Smith 2021), (Lopez 2019:42–43).
  • Reference list: “References Cited,” alphabetized by author; use full author names, year, title, outlet, and DOI/URL where stable.
  • Figures/Tables: Cite in text (e.g., “see Figure 2”); supply separate, high-resolution files with succinct captions.

3) Ethics, permissions, and data

  • Confirm approvals (IRB/tribal/community) and consent procedures as appropriate.
  • Secure permissions for third-party images/data; acknowledge repositories and collaborators.
  • Add a brief data availability statement (repository link or “available on request,” as appropriate).

4) Visuals & appendices

  • Preferred formats: TIFF/PNG (raster) or SVG/EPS/PDF (vector), 300+ dpi for photos; provide alt text.
  • Number consecutively (Figure 1, Table 1), each with a descriptive caption and credit.

5) Final checks

  • All citations appear in “References Cited,” and all references are cited in text.
  • Spelling, punctuation, and units (SI preferred) are consistent.
  • Conflict-of-interest and funding statements included (if applicable).
